School in Fontamara, Haiti

Picture
The Power of Education Foundation proudly opened its first school in Fontamara, a neighborhood of Port au Prince, Haiti on October 4th, 2010.  Our school provides Haitian students free access to high quality education, primary medical care and daily food support by matching them with a sponsor. There are currently 90 students enrolled in grades 1-3, with the goal of adding a new classroom each year.

Medical Home Project

Picture
Imagine a child attempting to go to school and learn with an untreated illness.  This is exactly what happens all over Haiti for children fortunate enough to go to school.  We know from past experience that most of the children we register will initially suffer from malnutrition, infection and other treatable disease.

We have the expertise to treat these conditions which has a direct impact on the academic achievement of school children.  We won’t just bring a medical team down once in a while but rather will assume responsibility for the ongoing health of the children we serve.

What could be more powerful than connecting your students to other students around the world?  The Power of Education Foundation is built on our belief that when our children befriend and begin to understand the developing world, they have the opportunity to learn some of life’s most valuable lessons:  compassion, friendship, and our connectedness as humans.

We offer you the opportunity to bring this gift to your students, and believe that when our children’s eyes are opened to the many different cultures and experiences that exist around the world, the future is brighter for us all.

Raising Awareness and Lesson Plans

Picture
It is our experience that children in the developed world become passionate when they learn about the status of Haiti’s children.  We have a team of educators who have created lesson plans for teachers to use in their classrooms to create awareness about Haiti.

These lesson plans have already been used in over 25 countries across the world and have reached approximately 8,000 elementary students since January, 2010.   These lessons effectively deliver curriculum and can be used by schools and classrooms to develop a fundraising project and teach students about Haiti.

Check out for our
free lesson plans through Teachers Pay Teachers.  Each lesson plan has a teacher’s guide as well as an interactive PowerPoint presentation ready to use in your classroom today!  The lesson plans are also popular among parents who want to explain more about the project or show where their sponsored child lives.

Opening Young Eyes, is an interesting article from International Educator about the importance of exposing K-12 students to global issues.
